Have You Ever Been a Guardian Angel? A True Story

Driving home from work one cold January night ... well, it was actually 2 a.m., I passed a
young boy, about 5 years of age, walking down the sidewalk. That's right! In the darkness of winter a
pajama clad little boy was walking, with determination, to somewhere.

I pulled over. This was crazy. Questions bounced around inside my head. Where is he
going? Does he live around here? Where are his coat and boots? If I just drove away
would his frozen body be found in a snow-bank tomorrow? Could I actually live with
myself if I did that? No!

Turning the steering wheel a hard left I made a U-turn and drove back towards the kid.
As I pulled up next to him I rolled down my window and asked if he wanted a ride. With
a great shiver he said yes, ran to the passenger door and jumped in. More questions
popped into my head. Is this how children disappear? What was I to do now? Was I being
watched? The boy was freezing, right? I had to do something despite appearances.
I cranked up the car heater to the max. Where do you live? I asked. He offered to point
the way to his house. During the brief drive I asked him what had happened that he was
outside. Typically, the answer was simple, if not innocent.

He was staying at his aunt's house overnight, but missed his mom. So, he decided to go
home. I pulled up in front of his house and escorted him to the front door. I rang the
doorbell a couple of times and waited. God, I hope this is the right house, I wondered.
The poor kid just stood silently next to me. The door opened.

A very disheveled woman stood on the opposite side of the threshold with an expression
of shock on her face. Is this your son, I asked? She couldn't respond. The boy, on the
other hand, greeted his mother and stepped into the house. Without a word, the woman
closed the door in my face.

...I always thought that a Guardian Angel was a full-time occupation. Constantly on the lookout for someone to rescue. Maybe it doesn't work that way. Perhaps they are chosen for certain circumstances due to place and time. I may have been selected at that moment because a little boy made a bad decision and I happened to be on my way home. Who knows?

Can you recall a similar event where you were called upon to be a Guardian Angel?
